Between 2018 and 2022, I regularly worked as an interpreter on expedition cruise ships in the most remote regions of the world and can therefore proudly claim to have interpreted north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle.

My key task on board was interpreting presentations by my colleagues in the expedition team for the guests on board, usually from English into German. This was done either simultaneously in a lecture room via personal guidance systems or consecutively.

I was also the German voice of the captains and the expedition leader, accompanied excursions ashore and assisted the medical staff on board with treatments and consultations.

In the expedition team on board, each team member has a specialization and must also be able to perform many other tasks. For example, when for nature landings, it must be ensured that guests and animals do not get too close to each other in order to protect the animals' natural habitat. Distance rules must be observed and rights of way granted, for example when penguins are on their way from the water to their nesting colonies.
